A couple of Niedermayers researchers for the British Medical Journal, recently studied “the risks of mild traumatic brain injury and neck injury associated with head banging, a popular dance form accompanying heavy metal music.”

Their conclusion? “To minimise the risk of head and neck injury, head bangers should decrease their range of head and neck motion, head bang to slower tempo songs by replacing heavy metal with adult oriented rock, only head bang to every second beat, or use personal protective equipment.”

I’ll give you a minute to stop laughing…

Frankly, I find the notion of academics studying anything related to heavy metal quite amusing – and it seems there are plenty of angles to consider. This one is my personal fave.

Equally humorous to me is that in this new Wikisociety in which we live, someone (or several people) actually took the time to detail, and reference, all the varying styles of head banging. Although, I completely honor them for doing it.

And so, in honor of this popular form of “dance,” and with a hat tip to Noisecreep’s entry the other day about the subject, here are a few YouTube vids featuring a choice collection of people (and animals) nodding their noggins.

Lynam formed in 2001 out of the ashes of Mars Electric and brand themselves as a modern outfit with a tendency toward arena rock. Warning: there are guitar solos here! ‘A good song is a good song. Big rock is what we’re all about. That’s what we strive to achieve,’ affirms Bunton. — (Via Noisecreep)

# # #

The brothers LYNAM were kind enough to check in from the road last night with a quick hello for ShipRockers everywhere… They are playing shows all over the Southeast in the coming weeks, so be sure to catch ‘em if you can! And don’t forget to follow them on Twitter!
